"My work stems from a personal desire to process and reflect on the increasingly haywire relationship, confusion, and general detachment – both of experience and understanding - that the modern-day industrialized world has with its surrounding environment, and the forced and uneasy assimilations that take place when the two inevitably meet.

By removing the human figure from my works and instead po...rtraying nature in man-made or manufactured settings, my work forces us to be impartial observers to these scenes and to process the tension within them as mere witnesses rather than active participants.

Much of this work deals with violence, disquiet, chaos and collapse, but not entirely absent in these works is also the suggestion of hope and the presence of beauty."

«The Ghost's Library series of photos was taken in unused rooms at a boarding school built in 1878, whose Gothic architecture is truly stunning. The light coming into the top floor where the images were shot is remarkable, and shifts and changes as the day progresses. The rooms are left as I found them with only the addition of my daughters as models.

There is something magical about capturing an instance in time through photography. The image becomes a moment that can be held and gazed upon. With the advent of digital technology the artist is able to capture more information in each frame and is then able to draw out these details and colors, and contrasting dark and light that would normally lay hidden. Each instance of working with an image that I have taken is like opening a treasure chest of possibilities. I sincerely hope that the viewer enjoys my work, even if it strikes a discordant note or makes one feel slightly uncomfortable. I hope to create a sense of anticipation and a wish to know how the 'story' ends. That an image inspired feeling is what is desirable to me.

One reviewer described my work thus: "The darker images conjure the suspense of something not quite right happening in the very next frame." Exactly. And I am going to let you decide what that might be.»

Gil Elvgren (1914-1980) is generally considered to be the greatest pin-up artist ever. Enjoy these stunning oil paintings, where the light is always beautiful.

Since Elvgren is a super-prolific artist, my idea was to present his work through a theme, among hundreds of paintings. For instance, Working class pin-ups. Pin-ups in the fields. Blushing pin-ups. Pin-ups with a dog. Black stocking pin-ups. No! Way too many girls wearing black stockings in the Elvgren universe! I finally cracked for the nautical theme, guess why..!

One of the most powerful and unforgettable song of the pop music universe certainly is Love Will Tear Us Apart (12" vinyl, 1980) by Joy Division. The accomplished song also brought its unique aesthetic through one of the most unequivocal album cover: anybody who has ever seen the abandoned stone angel (photographed by Bernard Pierre Wolff) will never forget.

The masterpiece angel is a permanent resident at Staglieno Cemetery, Italia. Onorato Toso sculpted it in 1910 for the Ribaudo tomb.

Based on the song Do Re Me from the movie The Sound of Music (! - according to cbc.ca), the Canadian pianist Glenn Gould composed in 1963 a fugue for a voice quartet called So You Want to Write a Fugue?

I asked myself the same kind of question: So You Want to Make a Brooch? Really? A wearable hand stitched piece of jewelry? The answer was yes.

Since I'm a miniature plush maker working with felt, I had (almost) everything to initiate the project. But a forgotten supply was still needed: back pins. I found yesterday what I was looking for on St.Hubert street, on a dark and chilly afternoon.

I enjoy hand embroidery more than I thought.

And it's a real pleasure to create in red, black, white. Those three colors always remind me of the lovely White Stripes headstrong design concept! Oh. Goth.

A wolf girl, her eyelashes.

A few weeks before my daughter's 17th birthday (last Wednesday), she told me she wanted a mommy-made little plushie as her gift.

- Ok, baby. I'll create a miniature ninja eskimo wolf for you.
- Make him a girl! Put some eyelashes! Just like Sponge Bob, FOUR eyelashes!
(She's a big fan of Sponge Bob. But Sponge Bob only has three eyelashes.)
- Ooh what a cool idea!

She chose the colors for the felt I'm gonna use: white wolf, denim blue coat. It's a girl so a touch of pink is added. He he.

First, the winter coat is cut and decorated with hand embroidery.

Second, I cut the body of the wolf girl. Her face was hand embroidered. Her head, breast and arms, sewn and stuffed.

Third, the winter coat is applied to the plush. After that, belly and legs will be filled with stuffing and sewn.

Here we go. There she is.

There are miniature ninja eskimo wolf plushies in my Etsy shop right now. Only boys. No girl. Yet.

Many years ago, my friend Gogo gave me a box including several small cards with beautiful Mexican folk art illustrations. And the flower I drew was inspired (I think) by the rose of the loteria board game card.

There are 54 cards in the game. Number 41 refers to the red flower. Yesterday, the sentence "Rosita, Rosa, I see you now" was found HERE (Loteria on wikipedia).

I drew the flower with black ink on paper. I photographed my drawing. With photoshop, colors were added on the digitalized image.

A dream I've had last spring.

In a strange house, I saw a big upside down ninja lion, his head hanging down. I was attracted, went to him, and began to caress him. Then I heard a thundering voice ordering me to stop touching the beast, because the beast would aggress me. I remember being afraid, but the attractive upside down ninja lion didn't snarl or attack me.

I woke up, took my pen and drew the scene on paper.

On the photographed drawing, coloration was done with Photoshop.

I took the ice rink floor from another image I made for a cartoon on an absolutely beautiful - beautifully absolute! - cover of Joy to the World by Frank Fuller.

After I took this picture of my new tiny ninja bunny periwinkle girl beside her friend, a tiny ninja bunny blue boy, the wind blew twice. First blow, the girl fell. Second blow, the boy fell.

A tiny creature taking place next to pencils… When I first saw this picture of my new Mini Ninja Bunny Blue Boy, this incredible movie came to my mind: The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957). You know, just before the existential closing monologue, when "the man hit by a mysterious mist" uses a giant pencil as a raft, to escape a flood…

I was continuing to shrink, to become... what? The infinitesimal? What was I? Still a human being? Or was I the man of the future? […] Yes, smaller than the smallest, I meant something, too. To God, there is no zero. I still exist!

This white tiny monster immediately becomes the avatar of Mimi Matelot, my online and artistic alter ego.

September 11th 2010: one of my dearest friends buys the mini plush on Etsy. He gives his yeti a name: Vaahtokaramelli. And even if Vaahtokaramelli is sold, he is still the logo of Mimi Matelot. May 21st 2011: I receive a lovely message from Johanne through facebook, telling me she wants to buy my white avatar. I go back to my needles and felt.

I looove custom resquests! Johanne also asked me for a chocolate mini bunny girl. Cool!

I was a little obsessed with dark thoughts last Saturday morning, but Johanne made my day :)

Winter Sinking Cupcake Girl: Broken Aeroplanes.

I usually listen to music very carefully and Winter Sinking Cupcake Girl is the result of my active attention. Aware that my work is deeply inspired by rock bands and songs I deeply love, my translation remains unconscious. Sometimes I realize often only months later that a specific song lead me to create a specific world. What a mysterious adventure :)

Broken Aeroplanes by Richard Butler (from his 2006 solo album): I don't know why exactly but this beautiful song inspired me to concoct a depressing – but almost happy – mood, I can call desperate indifference. (Broken Aeroplanes on youtube) Then I hand drew this sad and smart cupcake girl.

On the photographed drawing, coloration was done with Photoshop.

I took the ice rink background from another one of my images I made for a cartoon on an absolutely beautiful (beautifully absolute!) cover of Joy to the World by Frank Fuller.

Hooray! Vicky Petit-Boni is the fifth Petit-Boni listed in my Etsy shop. I like the colors I used to create this tiny ninja bunny girl: camel beige, periwinkle purple, navy blue, pink. The matchbox (where she sleeps) is painted in blue, which is also a pretty color in that combination.

Yeti lives in snowy mountains.

The Abominable Snowman is a 1957 British horror film, directed by Val Guest and starring Forrest Tucker and Peter Cushing.

After long and deep reflection, I concluded that yetis also have the ability to live in a tree.

At least MY yetis, who became ornaments, since I attached a thin loop on their head for hanging.

Yeah! Lou Petit-Boni is the fourth Petit-Boni listed in my Etsy shop. I love his face, he looks pretty smart with his misty eyes. Be welcome to meet Jimmy Petit-Boni. This cute tiny ninja plush bunny was hand stitched and stuffed by me. He's made of chocolate brown felt, has camel beige mask and tail, red eyes, blue bow. He is so small, he sleeps in a mini matchbox, measuring 2 x 1.5 inch (5 x 4 cm).

The brown ninja plush bunny has no face yet. He's got no eyes and cannot see felt, thread and scissors I used to create Jimmy Petit-Boni.

Jimmy could also have been a ninja plush bunny girl. The bow makes the difference.

Jimmy has two sisters: Coco and Betty.

My biggest fear as a drawer is self censorship. I would like to feel free for the rest of my life. And let the images coming -- as little surprises -- to my mind. Big Winter Bunny Girl and Small Hunter is about a weird erotic relation between a man (a very small man) and a girl (a very big girl). But the huge girl has nothing in her praying hands, while the mini man has a gun.

I love bunnies. They are so cute. I love the idea they are girly and boyish at the same time. But a simple bow can change everything! Bunnies inspired me a new series: Petit-Boni, sleeping in a matchbox.

How to display my plushy work? I went to my first craft fair a few weeks ago, with 30 of my tiny mini monster plush. But I didn't figure how to present them. So I built 4 stands with iron wire, dived into pink styrofoam. Each wire ring embraces one monster. I think it's was smart idea; they were looking great.

Last spring, during hockey playoffs, I was with one of my best friends. We were going to a bar to see a hockey game (Montreal Canadiens vs Philadelphia Flyers -- we lost) on a big screen with beer. I told him I was to make an usual kind of sculpture: papier mache bunny-sailors. My friend loved the idea and suddenly said:
- You should also make a Canadien fan bunny...
- Oh yes!

I drew this bunny a few months ago.

Last Monday morning, my friend The Spanish Guy found this beautiful cardinal in my backyard, dead with open wings. Its head was buried in the snow. I guess it died from kind of being drowned in white solid water.

My biggest custom order so far: Renée asked me to create twelve little plushies, dedicated to twelve little girls from Quebec city, Canada. What a fun request!

Now the twelve tiny creatures have a body. Although, their personality is not defined yet. They need to be identified with a unique: name, birth place, special sign, favorite meal, future profession. I think I'll ask soon my favorite Estonian baptizer to help me with this requisite step.

Soon. I mean before Christmas, of course.

Yes, a lighter! What a great idea! A black lighter, oh yeah! Then the photo shoot just began, and my sweet pink plushie monster took place between two BIG objects used to light up cigarettes.

One of my best friends gave an Estonian name to my little plushies. He is very funny, and we had a great time choosing different identities.

Why Estonian, you would ask? Because my friend and I are both fans of Russia, but we decided to 'avoid' the cyrillic alphabet. He then became an 'Estonian baptizer' .
