What that might be.

«The Ghost's Library series of photos was taken in unused rooms at a boarding school built in 1878, whose Gothic architecture is truly stunning. The light coming into the top floor where the images were shot is remarkable, and shifts and changes as the day progresses. The rooms are left as I found them with only the addition of my daughters as models.

There is something magical about capturing an instance in time through photography. The image becomes a moment that can be held and gazed upon. With the advent of digital technology the artist is able to capture more information in each frame and is then able to draw out these details and colors, and contrasting dark and light that would normally lay hidden. Each instance of working with an image that I have taken is like opening a treasure chest of possibilities. I sincerely hope that the viewer enjoys my work, even if it strikes a discordant note or makes one feel slightly uncomfortable. I hope to create a sense of anticipation and a wish to know how the 'story' ends. That an image inspired feeling is what is desirable to me.

One reviewer described my work thus: "The darker images conjure the suspense of something not quite right happening in the very next frame." Exactly. And I am going to let you decide what that might be.»

Gil Elvgren (1914-1980) is generally considered to be the greatest pin-up artist ever. Enjoy these stunning oil paintings, where the light is always beautiful.

Since Elvgren is a super-prolific artist, my idea was to present his work through a theme, among hundreds of paintings. For instance, Working class pin-ups. Pin-ups in the fields. Blushing pin-ups. Pin-ups with a dog. Black stocking pin-ups. No! Way too many girls wearing black stockings in the Elvgren universe! I finally cracked for the nautical theme, guess why..!

Stone angel

One of the most powerful and unforgettable song of the pop music universe certainly is Love Will Tear Us Apart (12" vinyl, 1980) by Joy Division. The accomplished song also brought its unique aesthetic through one of the most unequivocal album cover: anybody who has ever seen the abandoned stone angel (photographed by Bernard Pierre Wolff) will never forget.

The masterpiece angel is a permanent resident at Staglieno Cemetery, Italia. Onorato Toso sculpted it in 1910 for the Ribaudo tomb.

Cathy van Hoang is the owner of an Etsy shop named studiocvh (Low Light : Atmospheric : Ugly Beautiful : Photography). She went to the Italian cemetery in 2001 and took pictures of the iconic icon (!) using an old-school Pentax K1000.
