Space Soviet Brutalism

"Soviet Brutalist architecture is beautiful and strange, much of it like some odd abandoned spaceship, long-forgotten Hollywood Sci-Fi set from the 60s, or perhaps the fevered product of a very rigorously-minded architect on a great deal of hallucinogenic drugs." (source: cameraclubny.org)

90 buildings
Cosmic Communist Constructions Photographed
"A photographic record of 90 weird and wonderful buildings from the last decades of the USSR. Photographer Frédéric Chaubin reveals 90 buildings sited in fourteen former Soviet Republics which express what he considers to be the fourth age of Soviet architecture. His poetic pictures reveal an unexpected rebirth of imagination." (source: www.taschen.com)

Explicite concrete
"Concrete was the ideal working material for Soviet central planners: it made possible the construction of huge buildings on a truly heroic scale. Surprisingly, it also facilitated some remarkably beautiful structures." (source: www.weburbanist.com/brutalism)

Girl in animal mask

Girl, creepy animal mask, vintage clothes, plastic toy film camera, imperfection, artist. The unusual work of Pamela Klaffke.

"I am a Canadian photographer who shoots exclusively with analogue cameras, most often my Holga CFN. My photographs often feature grain and blur; i like vivid colour, creepy masks and dolls, and the beauty and warmth, unpredictability and imperfection of working with film. I don't digitally alter my images (with the exception of some occasional cropping) and my photography has a decidedly vintage bent. I shoot people, places and all kinds of unusual things." - Pamela Klaffke

What is a Holga camera?
"The Holga is a medium format 120 film toy camera, made in China, known for its low-fidelity aesthetic. The Holga's low-cost construction and simple meniscus lens often yields pictures that display vignetting, blur, light leaks, and other distortions. The camera's limitations have brought it a cult following among some photographers." (Holga on wikipedia.)

He learned me to smile.

Daydreaming, on a lazy afternoon.

"A daydream is a visionary fantasy, especially one of happy, pleasant thoughts, hopes or ambitions, imagined as coming to pass, and experienced while awake. […] While daydreaming has long been derided as a lazy, non-productive pastime, it is now commonly acknowledged that daydreaming can be constructive in some contexts. There are numerous examples of people in creative or artistic careers, such as composers, novelists and filmmakers, developing new ideas through daydreaming. Similarly, research scientists, mathematicians and physicists have developed new ideas by daydreaming about their subject areas." (Read more about daydream on wikipedia.)

Daydreaming, on a lazy afternoon, I was vaguely looking for a contemplative entertainment. Ok, let's go at Etsy.com and search among nine million of handmade listings with two keywords. Smile (why not) and strange (and why not). I landed here: RobotsAreAwesome, from Orlando USA, a shop full of wonderful smiling robots. Lovely finds!

Fall. It was in Fall when my friend Jack introduced me to the British band I Monster. But was it in Fall 2009 or 2010? I can't tell. Anyway, since that druggy night, every day the electronic dream pop duo cheers my ears up.

Blurry blue

Welcome to a misty and strange world, where a museum roof emulates a glass sinking boat, where a pure white orchid looks like: "What? Let's get the fuck out of here!" Beautiful blue polaroid art prints by Laura Hugues, photographer and needlepoint artist living in New York, USA.

Au Revoir Simone is a Brooklyn-based girl band, singing and playing on three vintage synths and a drum machine. They've described their disarmingly minimalist music quite accurately as dreamy electronic lo-fi keyboard pop.

Birds in the clouds

Susie Loucks is a photographer living in Los Angeles. I met her outstanding work while looking for bird art prints on Etsy.com. The ones she gives us are amazing, stopped by the camera shutter in such peculiar and elegant poses, usually unavailable to our eyes.

"Photographing birds takes time and patience, however the more time one spends observing an animal, the more one sees its distinct personality emerge. Whether its demeanor is shy, playful, or curious, when a bird is in flight, its feathers are like a flower in bloom, everyday is spring." - Susie Loucks
